If you post fic in tiny font, with serifs, with a completely miserable contrast between text and background colour, then I don't care how beautifully-characterised and intricately-plotted it is. You're writing badfic. My headache is literal, as are my yells of "MY EYES!!!!!!!!"
Currently banging my head against size 8 white Times New Roman on a red background. For the love of eyesight, why? I mean, presumably you want people to actually read this? Is this some kind of bizarre passive-aggressive test where the readers have to prove how much they love you?
(Yes, I'm aware of "?style=mine". It's still a pain in the arse.)

So -- I've read the rules and everything, and nowhere have I found that this kind of thing is unacceptable ... Um, so if it is, mods, please delete at your discretion.
Here's the deal. I'm giving three writing panels at a convention coming up over New Year's weekend, and of the three, one is essentially a "badfic panel" (actually, I'm pretty sure it's called "The Badfic Panel"). The premise is to discuss various qualities of "badfic" and why they're so irritating / how the author could do it better, and so I wanted to throw the idea out to a community that consists of people I don't know in real life -- since that's where I've been getting my ideas from, thus far.
So -- what's your number one pet peeve of fic?

Hello! I'm new to LJ and this community, and I find it funny to see all these badfics. By the way, I noticed something!!!
Most badfic authors are also terrible flamers (who carry their grammatical errors in their reviews too).

I'm a fanfic writer too, and I know how to rate fanfics (like, if one is a badfic or not). I believe I did the right thing:)

Hello everyone,
A few weeks ago, I posted looking for Xena fans who reside in the San Francisco Bay Area. I have now expanded my study to include internet-based interviews. I'm still hoping that pickers-apart of bad fanfic are also fans, and taking a gamble that at least some of you here are Xena fans, since it's a fairly large and fanfic-prolific fandom, and that the possibility of internet-based interviewing makes you come out of the woodwork in droves!
My name is Melissa Stanfill and I am a graduate student in Media and Cultural Studies at California State University, East Bay. I am currently seeking participants for a study of Xena fan culture. I am doing research on fans who have participated in internet activity around the show through such means as writing fan fiction, blogging, or discussion board postings in order to better understand fans’ experience of these activities. I have been fan of the show myself since it was first aired, and have been an avid reader of fan fiction for nearly as long; watching the culture develop has made me interested in researching it more formally!
If you volunteer to participate, you will take part in an email-based interview, with the possibility of follow-up interviews if you are willing. The interview(s) will focus on your participation in internet activity. Only I will have access to the data; it will be kept in a secure place. Hello folks! I'm Patch, and I'm new to the community. I've spent the last hour or so browsing some of the archives and having a bit of a giggle at some of the godawful shite that is masquerading as fanfiction :) I've got some more for you:

Pairing: Jack and kate (yep, minus capitalisation and all)
Snippet: Kate and Jack are really getting steamy now. Kate backs into the shower handle. She stops for a second to take a breath, then she turns it on.
Jack breathes hard as the hot water hits him. They look at each other and smile. Kate grabs some shampoo and washes his hair (cute!)
Then they start kissing again, and again , and again. Slowly they sink to the floor. And they gently but passionatly make love. Water and all.
The author's notes (including all the ones in the actual story) speak for themselves. Spelling and grammar are a joke, it's OOC to the max. What is with the use of "ya" instead of "yes", "yeah," etc? It kind of made my eyes bleed. But the best part? If you find the site it's on, check out the glowing reviews it got - some people think it was like reading an actual script, and that the author should take the place of the show's writers. I couldn't tell if they were kidding or not, but I so, so hope they were.

He goes down to her and tells her this and her reaction is nothing short of "ok, I love you too".
God, this story is so bad it's hilarious. The hotspring legend, the doggy stuff...you can tell it's written by a virgin because the sex scene is rediculous:

Okay, I have a bit of a strange request. If it's not proper to post here, please advise, and I will delete.
When I first started doing this fanfic thing, I was a squeeing Haldir/Legolas shipper. I wrote something called Deception in 2003 that I thought was OMG BRILLIANT!!11! at the time. I've lately been going back through all the crap I've written, and have come to the realisation that it sucked. Sucked hard.
And now I want it to die a sporky death. It has incest (Orophin/Rumil), rape (yes, I know. I should be killed.), Lovestruck Misunderstood Legolas™, and suffers from Bad Characterisation Syndrome. It's bad.
Will someone spork it, please? It's an embarrassment. If anyone is willing, you can find it here. And please, do not be kind (not that you should be, anyway). And I've linked directly to it, because I wrote it, and I have my permission for the link. Ahem.

Martha walked toward the phone to call chloe about her son when johnathon fell throught the door coughing and weezing like a little girl with asthma. Martha ran to his side.
JOHNATHON!!! are you alright (stupid question she thought after she brought him to the sofa)
MARtha he said (after what seems like days of silence) it's Clark he's gone he walked right into Jor-el's cave
What....What do you mean he was supposed to take lana to the airport then come home (she begins to sob uncontrolably)
Jonathon then tells Martha what he saw including there son's sad words about never belonging and his wish to feel normal.
Martha i will never forget the pain in his eyes then when he was about to leave with me Jor-el sucked him in. Martha could see the pain in her husbands eyes as he begain to cry.
After whats seems like hours of mourning and comforting each other Johnathon falls asleep and Martha is left alone to contomplate over how she will get her son back. After several minutes Martha run's to the computer in her son's room taking a minute to calm herself at the sight of a room that might remain empty for the rest of there lives she sits at Clarks computer and begins to type a e-mail to Virgil Swann.

Arthur lives in Elwood City with his parents. His mom is having a baby in March and Arthur is going to be an older brother and his Grandpa Joe died six months ago and his Uncle Thomas (his Aunt Amy’s husband) died three months later they both died in a car accident Arthur was only three and four (his Uncle Thomas died in June).
He never knew his Grandma Mary she died when Arthur was born or his Great-Grandpa Jim who died when Arthur was just three months after an illness.
Arthur wanted a sister when the baby comes if it’s a brother he’ll still love the baby. The day that his mother told him that she’s having a second child Arthur was happy because he doesn’t want to be an only child.
Arthur was born at Lakewood General Hospital in Elwood City on May 25th, 1989 to David and Jane Read. The only two Grandparents he has left are his Grandma Thora (his father’s mother) and Grandpa Dave (his mother’s father) and the only great-grandparent is his Great-Grandmother Theresa (his father’s grandmother and his grandmother’s mother)
Arthur misses his Grandpa Joe a lot (Arthur and his Grandpa Joe were buddies) he has many memories about his Grandpa Joe.
The only memories he might not want to talk about is the day of his Grandpa Joe’s death.

I recently had the displeasure of stumbling across this abomination. There are so many things wrong with it that I can't even attempt to list all of them. Horrid spelling, grammar and punctuation. Completely unrealistic. Horribly cliche. Full of impossible situations. The worst part about this fic is that it actually got over 300 reviews. It makes me want to smash my head against a wall in frustration. At first I thought this was some kind of joke making fun of fanfiction, but sadly that is not the case.
Basically, Kagome gets raped by Inuyasha after he loses control and transforms after which Kagome runs away back home. Then three days later she notices that she is suddenly fat(WTF?!) and decides that she is pregnant. So she goes back to the feudal era to tell Inuyasha that she is pregnant and that she is going to raise the baby alone, but once she gets there she is "reminded of how my heart, body and soul hungers for his touch, his love and kiss". After this point I couldn't force myself to read anymore so that's all I know.

It had only been three days since her rape but it seemed to be like an eternity,
Kagome stood up and ran to her bathroom, she gazed at her battered body in the mirror.
" God! Why me"! She cried as she punched the mirror with her fist, then she fell to the floor, curled up into a ball and sobbed for at least two hours. Her fist didn't hurt despite the bloody gash on it. She had now experienced pain for worst, everything else seemed like a paper cut.
The fragile broken girl soon fell asleep. But before she did she prayed to good for some peace,
Soon she arrived in front of the her high school, Kagome panted heavily as she ran threw the hallways until she reached her homeroom. Her heart pounded in her chest,
Kagome took a deep breath and turned the handle, " Miss Higurashi, you're late". Her teacher Mrs. Tsune sighed while sitting on her desk,
" Sorry". The teen frowned innocently as she quietly sat down near her best friends Ayumi, Yuka, and Erri. People giggled as they looked at Kagome, " Kagome"! Yuka whispered while nudging Kagome's shoulder,
The raven-hair girl turned around, " Yeah Yuka". " Sweetie your um, skirt isn't zipped up all the way and you can see your underwear".(Since when do skirts have zippers?)
The miko's eyes nearly shot out of her head " Oh! No"! She cried while trying to zip it up,
5 minutes later she climbed out of the shower, and Kagome wiped the steam off of the mirror.
She once again frowned, but her glance fell to her stomach. " What the!? She screamed just now noticing her plump tummy.(How the hell does an egg cell go from microscopic to stomach enlarging in 3 days?)
" I'm...I'm pregnant"!
" I guess that would explain my hunger and nausea". She blinked then came back down to the problem
" Inuyasha got me pregnant"!
“ Well the issue you face are quite difficult, ye is pregnant, ye is only a child, and finally, ye must confront Inuyasha”. Kaede stated with wisdom in her voice, “ I know, I know….it’s just”. Kagome sobbed with diamond like tears caressing down her cheeks,
“ I’m afraid”.
“ You have every right to be! After what that insensitive jerk did to you”! Sango said in an angered tone, Kagome looked up into Sango’s eyes. “ That one reason I’m scared, but the other is…..I – I still love him”. The reincarnation of Kikyo whispered,
That’s when everyone gasped, “ You – still love that asshole”!? Miroku asked with shock, “ Yes, and when he awakens – I might be reminded of how my heart, body and soul hungers for his touch, his love and kiss”.(Because we all know how much people who are raped want to get it on with the person who raped them.)
“ I don’t know why I love him, even after he tainted my pure heart. But I juts do”. Kagome told them, and her eyes were now puffy and red. “ child”. Kaede whispered with so much sympathy in her heart for her sister’s reincarnation,
I had to remove the space inbetween paragraphs because the author had like three lines between each one in attempt to make it look like her chapters look longer. Well, that's all for now. Please excuse me while I scrub my eyes out with steel wool and turpentine.
